] greta: we have protests across the country covered and we start with our own griff jenkins at beck nell university in lewisberg, west virginia where specter held a town hall today. >> that's right. there are 350 people packed into an auditorium. another 500 in overflow room and the senator took 30 questions. if i could just address the comments of mr. gibbs, he might want to take note. what i saw here today, greta, was a referendum on washington as much as it was a discussion of health care. at one point a woman stood up and said i'm generally concerned senator specter we are going down a road of socialism. the senator speckster said it's the good thing only a third of the room stood up. the entire room erupted in cheering to make their point. they are mad with the speed with which things are being done. that might be a message, greta, that mr. gibbs want to pay attention to. i will say that it was orderly here there were no protesters there was no shouting. no violence. but there was plenty of shouting shouting. lots of passion. i spoke to plenty of folks after the event. here is what

over two hours. greta: griff, i think you may hold the record for going to the most town hall meetings. are they smaller, bigger? what is the difference between the states? what are the similarities? >> a couple of observations. first, the earliest ones seemed to be a real referendum on washington, cash for clunkers, an array of issues, and the last cabin focused on the health-care fight, and as we saw tonight -- and the last have been focused on the health-care fight. you see a larger turnout of folks that are opposed to it and focusing on health care. but it is not getting any lower, and, of course, the recent polls suggest support is waning a little bit for the president's health-care initiatives, and tomorrow, the democrats are going to continue to have these organizing parties, not tea parties, but they will be organizing rallies in support of health care, and something we will cover here on friday, california and making its way all the way to washington, so this fight is heating up here at the end of august as kids get ready to go back to school. greta: griff, thanks. and many pe

by senator ben cardin. emotions once again running high. the meeting wrapped up just a few minutes ago. griff, what's happening? >> sean, passions were flying high here. i spoke with sarah cardin's press secretary. she says in the 23 years she's worked for the center, she's never seen passions so high. there were people yelling at each other. there was shouting on two sides of the street. there were people for health care legislation and people against. the people against it overwhelmingly outnumbered the folks that were for it. i found some people from baltimore and they were for it, but it was about five or six to one. people were absolutely upset about government intrusion, they were upset about the cost of this health care legislation being proposed and they were upset about the op-ed in "usa today". the scene inside was rumored to be controlled by the union, to be heavily pro-obama. it was not the case inside. those passions ran inside and almost medley boos ensued. senator cardin did a good job of handling himself, sean, but i'll tell you, he had trouble keeping things under control. >>
